Location: Louisville, Kentucky
Notable: This new school was planned around an existing school that needed to stay operational during construction. The new school features the first FEMA rated school storm shelter in Jefferson County.
The 82,000 sf Jefferson County Public Schools facility design is inspired by the existing culture of Indian Trail Elementary School which emphasizes hands-on learning and incorporates outdoor spaces in the student experience.
Although the available area for the new school is limited by the existing school footprint, the location of the new school preserves and highlights the existing natural landscape to create a park-like setting and preserves woodlands located at the north end of the site. The existing trail through the woodlands is integrated into the design and connectivity to the surrounding neighborhoods has been enhanced. The existing school will be replaced with parking and sports fields.
The building is organized around a large outdoor courtyard with a two story classroom wing to the east and west wing including administrative offices, gymnasium, cafeteria and tornado storm shelter. The main entrance with secure vestibule to control visitor access and centrally located Media Center create a welcoming community face to the south. The Media Center can function as a community gathering space while the Gymnasium provides space for events and sports leagues.
The large outdoor courtyard allows views out to the woodland area of the site from the interior and provides multiple types of outdoor learning opportunities. The wide corridors create a “commons” with a series of nodes where key functions can ‘spill over’ or be programmed with break-out space for small group learning. Flexible Classrooms are incorporated to support “maker spaces” that can be adapted and evolve over time.
Energy efficiency and sustainability were key considerations in the building design. Durable and energy efficient materials and systems have been incorporated throughout the project including brick and metal exterior cladding, high thermal resistant insulated concrete forms (ICF), energy efficient windows, sun control devices and energy efficient “cool-roof”.

Notable: Major addition with tight sight constraints.
PPA led a project team from conceptual design through construction administration for renovations of the historic Field Elementary School, and added a 6,400 SF library and lobby addition.
The new library and lobby serve as an event and bus rider entrance from the rear parking area. The addition is designed into a tight window of space to allow bus circulation patterns to remain functional. The walls of the rotated volumes are expressed as planes, like pages of a book, opening the interior to views of surrounding green spaces, connecting the exterior to the interior while directing views. The resulting composition creates a flexible educational and event space.

Location: St. Matthews Neighborhood, Louisville, KY
Notable: Minimal vernacular form and modern detailing reflects this company’s core values and connection to the community.
Designed as a real estate company’s HQ, and located at the transition of residential and commercial areas of the St. Matthews neighborhood, this new building endeavors to connect the two: its form a nod to the residential, and its modern detailing a reflection of this company’s culture. Programmatic flexibility, transparency, and connection to the surrounding neighborhood guided the design. The first floor is anchored by and unfolds around the glass enclosed meeting space, visible from the main intersection that the site occupies, with more private offices to the west of the plan. The second floor is an open loft space, designed for flexibility and collaboration. Large glass walls on the east and west ends provide views and ample light. There is a terrace space accessible from the east end that also serves as a cover for the entry porch.

Notable:
PPA was commissioned to create a dedicated Chapel space for the Sacred Heart Academy (High School). The scope required a complete re-imagining and shaping of the existing space.
The design solution defines the chapel as a ‘sacred vessel’ within which salvaged religious artifacts were utilized to further enrich the space. The entry procession, detailing, proportions and lighting were all carefully considered.

Notable: One of the most popular sushi restaurant in Louisville, PPA provided design services to completely redesign the existing space on a very tight schedule.
Teaming with the Kiel Thomson Company, PICKETT / PASSAFIUME / ARCHITECTS (PPA) was asked to re-imagine the space. The design narrative developed out of an interpretation of the craft of making sushi. The owners (Mi and Chef Kim) bring great precision and creativity to their cuisine, and the challenge was to physically embody this spirit in the new space.

Notable: Adaptive re-use project and one of the first to spearhead the revitalization of the Goss Avenue corridor. The Post is one of the most beloved restaurants in Louisville.
Formerly a Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post, many years of neglect had left this prototypical shotgun structure in disrepair and isolated.
The design strategy involved re-engaging the neighborhood by selectively ‘peeling away’ layers from the existing structure and reaching out to the street. The interior was ‘disassembled’ down to the wood framing and re-shaped to maximize light and connectivity. Salvaged materials from the building were exposed, refurbished and re-purposed in design elements throughout.

Notable: Adaptive re-use project, transforming abandoned industrial space into artisanal chocolate factory and visitor center
Located in the historic Portland neighborhood of Louisville, this adaptive re-use project transforms an 1800’s warehouse into an artisanal chocolate factory and visitor center. The program includes a state-of-the-art industrial kitchen, production space and storage, as well as retail and a flexible event and meeting space. The parti took full advantage of the large clerestory bays for the public spaces, while providing moments of encounter with the adjacent inner processes of the chocolatiers.
